Postdoctoral Position
Insect Phylogenomics & Population Genomics Palacký University Olomouc · Faculty of Science · Department of Zoology

The Department of Zoology at Palacký University Olomouc invites applications for a 12-month postdoctoral position in phylogenomics, population genomics, and molecular phylogenetics of insects, with a particular focus on ants (Formicidae). The successful candidate will work in close collaboration with the Laboratory of Molecular Ecology and Biodiversity.
Application deadline: October 31, 2026
- Duration: 12 months
- Anticipated start: January–March 2027 (negotiable)
- Location: Olomouc, Czech Republic
- Salary: CZK 45,000 gross/month; adequate for local living costs
Research focus
The primary focus will be the analysis of insect molecular and genomic datasets from Melanesia and the South Pacific, including genome-scale sequence data, ultraconserved elements (UCEs), RADseq data, Sanger sequence data (multilocus and DNA barcodes), and population-genetic data such as microsatellites.
The research will address phylogenetic relationships, population structure, species and lineage diversity, biogeography, and the evolutionary history of tropical insect lineages. The candidate will contribute substantially to bioinformatic and statistical analyses, interpretation of results, and manuscript preparation, with opportunities to develop additional research questions.
Qualifications
- A completed PhD in evolutionary biology, molecular ecology, phylogenetics, population genetics/genomics, bioinformatics, entomology, or a related field
- A demonstrated publication record in phylogenomics, molecular phylogenetics, population genetics/genomics, or insect systematics
- Strong practical experience with molecular sequence data and expertise in several relevant approaches (genomic data, UCEs, RADseq, Sanger data, microsatellites)
- Experience with population-genetic and/or population-genomic analyses and proficiency in relevant bioinformatic and statistical methods
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an international research team
- Good scientific writing and communication skills in English
Previous experience with insects, particularly ants or other non-model organisms, is advantageous but not essential.
What we offer
An international research environment focused on tropical molecular ecology, evolution, and biogeography, with access to existing molecular datasets and biological collections from New Guinea and the South Pacific. Palacký University is one of the major research universities in the Czech Republic, and Olomouc is a historic university city with a large academic community and a relatively low cost of living.
